Nice as it is to build a new grain store to improve facilities for drying and storing crops, making the best of what´s already available can overcome deficiencies at considerably less cost
Andrew Watts is the new chairman of the NFU Combinable Crops Board. He outlines the key challenges for arable growers and the board's priorities for the coming year
It strikes me that farming is becoming less about skill and husbandry, and rather more a game of Russian roulette. For instance you can apply fertiliser at the correct growth stage, yet its impact will be determined either by the leaching of the monsoon-like rain we have been experiencing; or if it is not raining, the fertiliser will volatilise during the drought.
About 40 years ago, a group of people eventually boarded a plane at Gatwick bound for the Italian Alps. They had been severely delayed on their journey to the airport after the gear lever of their clapped-out minibus came off in the driver's hand. There was a lot of muttering of discontent about the delay from fellow plane passengers - among these were my parents.

Chiltern is a UK family business with over forty years experience in all aspects of the slug pellet market in the United Kingdom. Since 1980 we have specialized in developing more advanced slug pellets both by the manipulation of the active ingredient metaldehyde and in pellet manufacture. The breakthrough with the active ingredient came with the patenting of our TR3799 technology followed by the introduction of our family of TR3799 metaldehyde slug pellet products.
This technology means that the Chiltern range of 1.5 and 3% TR3799 metaldehyde products can be applied at very low dose rates. Work continued on the improvement of production technology and this year (2009) we proudly launch our new TR3799 Metamax technology which results in pellets which are almost dust free, have a density similar to wet process pellets and spread much more evenly.
All our slug pellet products are approved for use on any crop and on bare ground with multiple applications (please see the statutory information section for the individual products for precise details). However we do advise farmers not to apply more applications than is really necessary to obtain good slug control and certainly no more than 700 g metaldehyde per hectare per year. Applications should be made according to the label instructions and care must be taken not to contaminate any water courses with pellets or used containers.
With all the pressures on the environment and the ever increasing costs of products it is vitally important for farmers to produce top quality produce whilst keeping their own costs to a minimum without adversely affecting the environment. At Chiltern we strongly believe in helping to save the environment and to help farmers to keep their input costs down. This is why we have developed our TR3799 patented metaldehyde technology for our 1.5% and 3% pellets. These allow farmers to use as little as 3kg/ha (45 g a.i./ha) product as compared to 7.5 kg/ha for the old 6% pellets thus reducing costs all round and helping your carbon footprint with less packaging, lower transport utilization and less active ingredient. Even at 3 kg/ha you will achieve 40 baiting points per m2 , the recognised standard for good slug control.
